Improving Beverage Industry Operations: A Smart-Glass Inspection Case Study

In 2018, a key player in the beverage industry sought innovative solutions to enhance efficiency in their bottling facilities. We visited a bottling plant, conducted interviews to be understand the challenges and were able to collaborate with their innovation and maintenance teams to propose novel solutions. The eyllo team, successfully implemented and showcased a groundbreaking solution using smart-glasses to enable real-time communication between on-site technicians and the central engineering team.

Context

The project aimed to address two critical challenges: inspecting beer filters and maintaining bottling lines. The facility faced limited on-site bandwidth, adding complexity to these tasks.

As the team leader, I conducted site visits, interviewed technicians and engineers, gathered requirements, and assessed network capabilities, including available bandwidth.

Demonstration

Our solution, eyllo Field Service, integrated seamlessly with smart-glasses, enabling remote real-time video/audio calls, asset management, and workflow. Leveraging WebRTC, the solution achieved real-time audio and video communication with less than 256 kb/s bandwidth. The smart-glasses facilitated the inspection of the bottling line, enabling collaboration between a remote expert and an on-site technician. This collaboration proved instrumental in resolving bottling line issues and optimizing line speed.

Result

The demonstration showcased the feasibility of remote facility inspections by experts, fostering collaboration between dispersed teams. This approach significantly reduced issue resolution time, enhancing overall productivity and minimizing downtime.

This successful proof of concept illustrates how innovative technology, such as smart-glasses and real-time communication solutions, can revolutionize traditional operations in the beverage industry. The ability to address challenges remotely opens new possibilities for efficient collaboration and problem-solving, setting the stage for transformative advancements in the industry.
