Beverage Industry: Inspection with Smart-glasses

In 2018, one of the leaders in the beverage industry was exploring innovative solutions to improve the efficiency of their bottling facilities. My team at eyllo and I implemented and demonstrated a solution to allow real time communication between a technician at the remote facility and the engineering team at their central location.

Context

In this project, the innovation team at the beverage company identified that there were two main issues to be addressed:

  1. The first one was inspecting the filters for the beer.
  2. The second issue was inspecting and maintaining the bottling lines.

We also identified that at the time, there was limited bandwidth available on-site.

As a team leader, I visited the site, interviewed the technicians and engineers involved with the operation of the facility, gathered the requirements, assessed the network availability and measured the available bandwidth.

Demonstration

In order to solve the issues identified by the innovation team, we used a smart-glass with our solution eyllo Field Service (https://eyllo.com/eyllo-products.html) that allows for remote real-time video and audio calls, asset management, and workflow. The real-time communication is implemented using webrtc and allow for real-time audio and video using less than 256 kb/s of bandwidth. The solution was used to inspect the bottling line. A remote expert at a different location was able to collaborate with a field technician at the facility in order to sort out issues with the bottling line and increase the line speed.

Result

With the demonstration, we were able to prove that the facility could be inspected by experts at a remote location, allowing for collaboration between remote teams, reducing the time it would take for issues to be solved, thus improving the productivity and reducing down time.
